Have you ever had trouble sleeping in a new place?

Lots of people do. And now researchers from Brown University in Rhode Island think they know why.

They found that one-half of the brain “remain more awake” than the other half when people are trying to

sleep in a new place.

The sleep findings were reported in Current Biology by Brown University. In their report, the researchers

said many people report they have a harder time sleeping the first night at a hotel or other places outside

their home. They call it “first-night influence”.“In Japan they say,‘If you change your bed, you can’t

sleep,’”said Yuka Sasaki, one of the report’s writers. “You don’t sleep very well in a new place. We all

know about it.”

The researchers measured brain waves for 35 volunteers over two nights in a laboratory. The two nights

were a week apart. They found during the first night the left half of the brain was more active than the right

half. This was during the first deep-sleep period, the researchers said.

Sasaki said a lot of questions remain.

Researchers did not keep measuring brain waves all night long. So, they don’t know if the left half keeps

“watch” all night, or whether it “works in shifts with the right half later in the night”. They also do not

know why the brain activity, at least during the first period of deep sleep, is always on the left half.

For some, the research may be calming. It is good to know that our brain is “looking out for us” in a new

place. But it may not help with sleep. That brain activity, at least according to this new research, makes it

harder to get the sleep people need to wake up well rested in the morning.

48. How many times did the researchers measure brain waves for 35 volunteers?

   A. Once. B. Twice. C. Three times. D. Four times.

49. The researchers found _____ during the first deep-sleep period.

   A. the brain waves remained the same

   B. the brain activity helped with sleep

   C. the right half of the brain kept “watch”

   D. the left half of the brain was more active

50. The underlined word “calming” has the closest meaning to “_____”.

    A. pleasing B. different C. serious D. strange

51. What is the passage mainly about?

                                   D

Sometimes people are not clear about what kind of food is healthy, and what kind of food may do

harm to our health. The USDA has prepared a food guide to help people learn about which kind of food is

the healthiest to eat. The food guide describes six main food groups: meat (like fish and chicken), dairy

(like milk and cheese), grains (like bread and rice), fruit and vegetables. The last group is fats and sweets.

The USDA also suggests how much of each food group is healthy to eat daily. Though this guide was

prepared by the US government, it is very useful for people all over the world.

As a result of years of study, we know that too much animal fat is bad for our health. For example,

Americans eat a lot of meat and only a small amount of grains, fruit and vegetables. Because of the way

they eat, they have a high rate of cancer and heart disease. In Japan, people eat large amounts of grains

and very little meat. The Japanese also have a very low rate of cancer and heart disease. The Japanese live

longer than anyone else in the world. However, when Japanese people move to the US, the rate of heart

disease and cancer goes up as their eating habit changes. And as hamburgers, ice creams and other high-

fat foods become popular in Japan, the rate of heart disease and cancer is going up there as well. People

are also eating more meat and dairy food in other countries, in which the disease rate is going up along

with the change of the way people eat. Doctors everywhere suggest people eat more grains, fruit and

vegetables and less meat and dairy food.

Eating healthily is important for children as well as their parents. When parents have poor eating

habits, their children usually do, too. After all, children eat in the same way as their parents. When parents

eat healthy food, the children will learn to enjoy it, too. Then they will develop good eating habits.

Doctors suggest parents give their children healthier food such as fruit, vegetables and juice.

Everyone wants to live a long, healthy life. We know that the food we eat affects us in different ways.

For example, doctors believe that fruit and vegetables can really protect people from many different

diseases. On the other hand, animal fat can cause diseases. We can change our eating habits now and

enjoy many years of healthy living.

Most people hope to have a memory which helps them succeed in study, work and life. Can

needed oxygen for the brain. Running ,riding a bike ,swimming and even walking two or three times a

week are helpful. Moreover, getting enough sleep is important. Only when your brain gets a good rest,

can it work well. The healthier your lifestyle is, the better your memory will become, but do not expect a

sudden change---it takes a long time to make a difference.

Memory skills help you remember things better. The following three are the most widely used.

Chunking is a way of remembering a piece of information by cutting it into smaller ones. For example,

to memorize a ten--digit telephone number 2127983630,you can divide the digits into three groups: first

212,then 798,and lastly 3630.This method is far more effective than remembering a string of 10 digits.

Organization means organizing information into groups of the the same kind. For example, trees, grass

and flowers are plants; tigers, panadas, horses and cows are animals. Imagery is remembering newly

learnt information by using your imagination and connecting it with something that you are familiar with.

However, memory skills will hardly work if you don’t understand the information. What’s more,

only a regular review can make the memory last long. That is why students are always advised to go over

what they have learnt after one day and then after three days, and then use it as regularly as possible.

Human brains are like muscles that need nutrients(养分,营养物) and exercise to become

stronger. If you make a few lifestyle change and try some memory skills, you can certainly improve your

  memory.

    每段对话或独白你将听两遍。(共 15 分,每小题 1.5 分)
     请听一段对话,完成第 6 至第 7 小题。

                    中国现代教育网 www.30edu.com 全国最大教师交流平台

W: Which museum? The Science Museum?
M: No, the Art Museum.
W: Good! How did you go there?
M: I planned to ride my bike there, but when I was about to go out, it suddenly began to rain, so I took a
   bus there.
    请听一段对话,完成第 8 至第 9 小题。
W: Hi, Mike!
M: Hi, Anna! How are you doing?
W: Not too bad. You know, my family only moved to the city three months ago. It’s very different from my
hometown! There are about 20, 000 people in my hometown, but this city has a population of over 18,
   000, 000.
M: Where did you live before?
W: In a small town near Mexico City. My father was out of work and when he was offered a job
here, he said yes! The boss even found us a flat, a quite nice flat, actually. So here we are, in
this big city, but I’m not sure whether I like it or not.
M: Why?
W: Oh, for lots of reasons. I mean it’s noisy and crowded. And some of the streets aren’t very clean.
M: It’s true. The city has a huge population, and it is growing really fast. But you know, I’ve always lived
   here, and I love it.
W: Why?
M: Er, while you see, there’s a lot to do, lots of people to meet.
W: Yes, I agree. But at the moment all I want is to see my friends at home — and they’re so far
   away!
M: Yeah, what a pity!
    请听一段对话,完成第 10 至第 11 小题。
W: Hi, John. What are you writing? A new book?
M: No, I’m writing a letter to my English teacher. I want to say thanks to him.
W: Oh! He must be a nice teacher.
M: Yes. Though he was very strict, he really pushed me to do my best.
W: That’s great!
M: He not only taught us English but also helped us understand life better.
W: What about his class?
M: It was really interesting because he taught the class in clever ways. He really helped me develop my
writing skills. We all liked his class.
W: Lucky you!
    请听一段对话,完成第 12 至第 13 小题。
W: I’ve got some photos of my holiday in Spain here.
M: Did you go with your family, Sarah?
W: Yes, look! This is my mother walking in the mountains.
M: What lovely trees!
W: Yeah, especially the colour of the leaves! And this is my sister, Caroline, swimming. She preferred
swimming here to the hotel pool.
M: The sea looks very blue. And who’s this standing outside a castle?
W: Jack. But it’s not a castle, it’s one of the oldest buildings in Spain.

M: And this is you, Sarah, buying bananas in a market?
W: Yes, that wasn’t far from our hotel. The fruit was really cheap there.
M: And here’s Peter eating. Is he in the garden of your hotel?
W: Actually, it’s a restaurant near the hotel. We often went there.
M: Why is your father wearing the earphones in this photo?
W: Oh, he loves history. He’s in a museum here listening to some interesting information. That was his
   favourite day.
M: Oh, you must have had a great time!

    请听一段独白,完成第 14 至第 15 小题。
Nobody wants to live in a polluted area. Unluckily, many of us live in this type of place. Should we do
something to make the area where we live nicer for everyone around? Let’s see what Singapore, a small
country in Southeast Asia, does to protect the environment.
In Singapore, many communities send photographs of dirty areas to people to let them know how terrible
the polluted environment is. Some communities often plan activities such as clean-up days, to get the
neighbours involved in their community and to form the habit of keeping it clean.
It’s also important that the communities have some educational programmes. With the programmes,
people pay more attention to waste reduction and recycling.
Besides the educational programmes, people living in the neighbourhood volunteer to make the
environment cleaner and greener.
To Singaporeans, keeping Singapore clean does not only mean keeping the area clean, but also
beautifying it. Once some waste ground has been cleaned, it’s a great idea to plant some flowerbeds
there. It beautifies the neighbourhood and gives everyone a sense of pride.
Now, Singapore is already about half covered in green, but it wants to go farther. The country aims
to go from “a garden city” to “a city in a garden”. It means there will be more flowers, trees, parks and
forests in the beautiful country!

三、听对话,记录关键信息。本段对话你将听两遍。(共 10 分,每小题 2 分)

    请根据所听到的对话内容和提示词语,将所缺的关键信息填写在答题卡的相应位置上。
W: Congratulations on the award, Peter.
M: Thank you.
W: When did you first become interested in sport?
M: When I was four years old, I started playing tennis with my father and football with my friends. I
decided then that I wanted to be either a professional tennis player or a professional footballer.
W: So tennis and football were your first loves?
M: That’s right. Then later, when I was at school, I became interested in table tennis.
W: Why did you like table tennis?
M: Because it’s a fast game.
W: Oh, I see. Did you do any athletics at school?
M: Yes, I did some athletics at school and some swimming. I enjoyed both of these.
W: When did you start playing rugby?
M: I started playing rugby at high school and I loved it. I knew rugby was the sport for me. So when I grew
up I decided to become a professional rugby player.
W: And you still have enough energy left to go sailing in your spare time.
M: Sailing is my way of relaxing. I love being out on the water, away from everything and everyone.
