              unit 4    What’s the best movie theater?

                    Period     1   Section A 1 (1a-1c) 
Teaching aims:
Vocabulary:
   popular, comfortable, worse, worst, biggest, closest, friendliest, funniest, cheap, cheapest, 
   pretty bad, service, part, price, screen, seat
Target language: 
   What’s the best cinema?
   Showtime Cinema. It’s the cheapest.
Structures:
   Superlatives with –(i)est, the most
   Irregular comparisons good, better, the best, bad, worse, the worst
Ability aims:
   1. Students will be able to discuss their preferences. 
   2. Students will be able to make comparisons about stores or other things.
   3. Practice students’ listening skill.
Emotional aims:
   Ss will learn to share their preferences to each other.. 
Teaching important points:
   1. Ss can use the comparative and superlative to discuss their preferences.. 
   2. Ss can make comparisons about stores.
Teaching difficult points:
     Students can use comparative and superlative forms correctly. 
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Warming up and review.
   1. review .
   2. Show the pictures, and say about the things using comparative and superlative forms
Step 2 Words Presentation
    Learn the new words. 
Step 3. Work on 1a.
   1. How do you choose which movie theater to go to? Write the things in the box under 
   “Important” or “Unimportant”.
   2. Ss discuss with their partners and write the words in the box in the chart. 
Step 4 Target language Presentation
   Show the pictures and learn the language.
Step 5 Work on 1b. 
    1. Read the instructions.
    2. Point to the chart. Explain the meaning of any phrases students don’t know.
    3. Point to the list of Movie theaters in the instructions and the blank lines under the Movie 
     theater heading.
    4. Play the recording the first time. Students only listen.
    5. Play again. Ask students to write the names of each movie theater on the blank line.

      6. Check the answers.
Step 6 Pair work.
    1.Ask students to look at the pictures in activity 1a. Then ask students to read the sample 
     conversations in activity 1c.
    2. Ask students to read the instructions to the class .
    3. Ask students to work in pairs and make their own conversations about the movie theater in 
      the picture.
    5. Ask some pairs to present one or more of their conversations to the class.
Step 7 Summarize -- superlative forms
Step 8 Homework
   1 Remember the vocabulary and the target language.
   2 Review the superlative degree of adjectives.

Teaching aims 
   Knowledge aims:
   1. Students will be able to master the following words and phrases: worst, cheaply, song, DJ, 
   choose, carefully, reporter, so far, fresh, comfortably, worse, service, pretty, menu, act, meal.
   2. Students will be able to master the following sentence structures:
   --Which is the worst clothes store in town?       
   --Dream Clothes. It’s worse than Blue Moon. It has the worst service.
   --What do you think of 970AM?   --I think it’s pretty bad. It has the worst music.
Ability aims:
    1. Students will be able to discuss their preferences. 
    3. Students will be able to make comparisons about stores or other things.

Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Free talk
   T: What’s the best movie theater in our town? Why?
Step 2  Presentation
   T: What are they? What kind of clothes store do you like to go to?
   What do you think is a good clothes store?
   Present some pictures and get Ss to learn the new words and phrases, then try to answer the 
     questions.
Step 3 Practice
   T: There are three clothes stores, which one is the best?
   Present pictures of different stores, ask Ss to make comparisons about the quality, service and 
   price.

Step 4 Discussion 
   T: What do you think is a good radio station? There are 3radio stations, 970AM, 97.9FM, 
   107.9FM, which one is the best?
Step 5 Listening
   Get Ss to listen to the tapes and do 2a, 2b.
Step 6 Pair work
   Get Ss to work in pairs and make conversations like this.
   A: Hello. I’m a reporter. Can I ask you some questions?  
   B: Sure.
   A: What’s the best clothes store in town?
   B: I think Miller’s is the best.
   A: Why do you think so?
   B: Well, Miller’s has …
Step 7 Reading
   1. Get Ss to read 2d and answer the questions. 1. Is Greg new in town?
   2.Where is the best supermarket? What can you buy there?  
   3. Which cinema is the newest? What does Helen think of it?
Step 8 Role-play the conversation
   Ask Ss to role-play the conversation and then act in front of others.
Step 9 Homework 
   1.Read and recite 2d.

Teaching aims:
Vocabulary:

  Step 2 Read grammar focus.
     1. Let the students read the sentences in the box and make sure they understand them. Pay 
     attention to the use of the following sentences: Which is the worst clothes store in town? 
     Dream Clothes . It’s worse than Blue Moon .  It has the worst service.
     What do you think of 970AM?
     2. Find the structures.

   2. Talk with your partner.

Step 6 . Homework. 
   Finish the work on the paper.

Teaching aims:                                                                    
   Vocabulary:
      Creative; performer.
Target language: 
   1. My sister Lucy is the funniest person I know. 
   2. Mary sings the best in our class.
   3. Who is the best performer?--- Eliza was the best performer.
 Structures:
   Superlatives with –(i)est, the most

Step 1 Warm up. 
    1. Ask three students to act, the others say the word and the superlative form.

    Read and say funniest is the superlative form of the word funny.
    2. Show the words and say the superlative forms.   
Step 2 Work on 1a. 
    1. Write these words and phrases next to their opposites in the chart.
    2. Check the answers with the Ss.
Step 3 Work on 1b. 
    1. Show some pictures and learn to say:

    Liu Qian is the most creative person I know .
    I think Zhao Benshan is the funniest person I know
    2. Ask some students to act, and learn to say:
    Jeff Green is the loudest person I know.
    Mary sings the best in our class.
    3. students discuss in their group. 
   4. Students say the sentences one by one.. 
Step 4 Work on 1c and 1d.
    1. T: Many people have talent. Let’s go to a talent show.
    2. Tell Ss this school had a talent show last weekend. Some Ss and some teachers took part in 
    the talent show. Now listen to the conversation and math the pictures with the performers.  
    2. Play the recording for the Ss. Ss just listen for the first time. Play the recording again and 
    match the pictures with the performers.  
    3. Check the answers:  
    Work on 1d: 
    1. T: Now please look at the chart in 1e. What do the people say about the performers?  
    You'll listen to the tape again. Then try to fill in the blanks.   
    听力指导:要抓别人对他们每个人的评价所说的词汇,也就是那些表示评价的形容词
    或副词的最高级形式。因此在听的时候,应重点放在对人物的表演进行评价的最高级
    形式上。
    2. Ss listen to the recording carefully and try to fill in the blanks.

   make up, example, for example, poor, seriously, give 
   Target language: 
    Everyone is good at something, but some people  are truly talented.
   All these shows have one thing in common. 
   That’s up to you to decide.  
   When people watch the show, they usually play a role in deciding the winner.
   But if you don’t take these shows too seriously, they are fun to watch.
   One great thing about them is that they  give people a way to make their dreams come true.

      meanings of all the questions. Then read the passage again and find the answers to the

     2. Ss read carefully and try to find the answers to the questions.  
     3. Check the answers with the class. 
Step 5 Ask questions and answer them .
Step 6 Make a survey. Who’s got talent in the class?

   1. Think about some of the best places/things in your town. Why are they the best? 
   2. Give some examples to the Ss.

   Why: Because it is the most beautiful school in my town. 
   Best super-market:  Zhongbai Supermarket 
   Why: Because it is the most popular and the cheapest.… 
   3. Ss try to think it and think about the reasons.  
   4. Try to fill in the blanks.  
Step 4 Work on 3c: 
   1. Write about your town and the best places/things there.
