A I’ve often wondered if I might do better as a travel agent rather than as a psychologist. It seems that I have been more dramatically affected by certain kinds of travel experiences than I ever have. My trip to Iceland is a fine example of that. The plan was to spend two days in a remote mountain hut in Iceland.I was working on a photographic book about winter in Iceland and needed to capture images of this amazing region of high mountain peaks, smoky volcanoes, and lakes with floating icebergs. The moment after we arrived, the weather turned extreme making visibility impossible. It snowed so much and the wind blew so hard that we couldn’t leave the tiny hut.To stay warm,we walked around in circles much of the day inside the tiny hut.We tried to call for help but the radio did not work. Day after day,we watched our supplies of food and fuel grow dangerously short. We got acute cabin fever(幽居病)and started going for walks and ski expeditions outside.Even when the weather finally broke, nobody came to get us even though it was three days beyond our scheduled pickup.By the time the rescue team came to pull us out,we had all given up hope. From then on,the world looks different to me,as does my life.It would have taken me years of psychotherapy to get to the same point. Almost everyone has a story to tell, and interestingly, most of these experiences were not altogether pleasant at the time.In fact,it appears that the most constructive life-changing journeys were those that involved some sorts of awful and uncomfortable events that forced the person to develop new resources, increase confidence, and solve problems in new ways. 中国现代教育网 www.30edu.com 全国最大教师交流平台 21.The writer went to Iceland to_______. Bird Migration Season Is in High Season September and October are busy months for bird watchers. A.Reasons to Visit Oregon’s Washington County B.Washington County Welcomes its Best Season C.Charm of the Colorful Season D.Take Adventures in the Coming Autumn C Jeanne Clamant, a French woman, became a record breaker on 17 October of 1995, when at the age of 120 years and 238 days, she became the longest-lived human being on record. A Japanese man died in 1986 at the age of 120 years and 237 days. Jeanne Clamant lives in a small old people’s home in the south of France; her husband, her only child and her grandson have all died. She is nearly blind and deaf and is always in a wheelchair, but her doctor describes her as being more like a 90-year-old in good health than someone of 120. She still has a lively sense of humor. When asked on her 120th birthday what she expected of the future, she replied: A very short one. She also remarked that she thought the good Lord had forgotten all about her. So what is the key to a long life? According to some doctors, diet, exercise and no smoking are the three important factors. Jeanne Clamant has followed two of the tips(窍门). She has always eaten a healthy diet, and she used to do exercises every day until she broke her leg at the age of 115. However, until recently she drank two glassed of strong red wine a day, and she does smoke (now only a little). Besides, Jeanne Clamant might have got very good genes(基因) from her parents. Her father lived to the age of 94 and her mother to 86. A local lawyer bought her house when she was 80 under an agreement that he would pay her some m oney every year until her death. It must have seemed a good 中国现代教育网 www.30edu.com 全国最大教师交流平台 move at the time, but so far the lawyer has paid her at least three times the value of the house. Every year on her birthday Jeanne Clamant sends him a card saying: Sorry, I’m still alive! 28. How does Jeanne Calment feel about her old age? A. She is miserable and unhappy. B. She is cheerful and humorous. C. She would like to live much longer. D. She feels she is going to die very soon. 29. Jeanne Calment owes her good health and long life to _______. A. smoking only a little every day B. her giving up smoking and drinking C. drinking two glasses of strong red wine every day D. the good genes from her parents, a healthy diet and some exercises 30. Which of the following could best replace the word “move” in the fourth paragraph? A. deal B. trick C. march D. sport 31. Why does Jeanne Calment say “Sorry, I‟m still alive” to the local lawyer every year on her birthday? A. Because she had an agreement at 80 with the lawyer which was to her advantage. B. Because she has asked the lawyer to pay her more rent than they first agreed. C. Because the lawyer has paid her much more money than the value of the house. D. Because the house she sold to the lawyer isn’t worth the money he has already paid. D Can you believe your eyes? A recent experiment suggests that the answer to that question may depend on your age. Martin Doherty, a psychologist at the University of Stirlin g in Scotland, led the team of scientists. In this experiment, Doherty and his team tested the 中国现代教育网 www.30edu.com 全国最大教师交流平台 perception(观察力) of some people, using pictures of some orange circles. The researchers showed the same pictures to two groups of people. The first group included 151 children aged 4 to 10, and the second group included 24 adults aged 18 to 25. The first group of pictures showed two circles alone on a white background. One of the circles was larger than the other, and these people were asked to identify the larger one. Four-year-olds identified the correct circle 79 percent of the time. Adults identified the correct circle 95 percent of the time. Ne xt, both groups were shown a picture where the orange circles, again of different sizes, were surrounded by gray circles. Here’s where the trick lies in. In some of the pictures, the smaller orange circle was surrounded by even smaller gray circles — making the orange circle appear larger than the other orange circle, which was the real larger one. And the larger orange circle was surrounded by even bigger gray circles — so it appeared to be smaller than the real smaller orange circle. When young children aged 4 to 6 looked at these tricky pictures, they weren’t fooled—they were still able to find the bigger circle with roughly the same accuracy as before. Older children and adults, on the other hand, did not do as well. Older children often identified the smaller circle as the larger one, and adults got it wrong most of the time. As children get older, Doherty said, their brains may develop the abili ty to identify visual context(视觉语境). In other words, they will begin to process the whole picture at once: the tricky gray circles, as well as the orange circle in the middle. As a result, they’re more likely to fall for this kind of visual trick. 32. Doherty and his team of scientists did an experiment to evaluate________. A. children’s and adults’ eye-sight B. people’s ability to see accurately C. children’s and adults’ brains D. the influence of people’s age 中国现代教育网 www.30edu.com 全国最大教师交流平台 33. When asked to find the larger circle,________. A. children at 6 got it wrong 79 % of the time with no gray ones around B. only adults over 18 got it right 95% of the time with gray ones around C. children at 4 got it right about 79 % of the time with gray ones around D. adults got it right most of the time with gray ones around 34. According to the passage, we can know that________. A. a smaller orange circle appears bigger on a white background B. an orange circle appears bigger than a gray one of the same size C. a circle surrounded by other circles looks bigger than its real size D. a circle surrounded by bigger ones looks smaller than its real size 35. Visual context may work when children get older than________. A. 4 B. 6 C. 10 D. 18 第二节(共 5 小题;每小题 2 分,满分 10 分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填 入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Health Our health is the only thing we really have in the world. You can take away our money, our house, or our clothes and we can survive.___36___That is why I eat healthfully, exercise regularly, and keep up my social life. __37___I try to avoid foods high in fat like French fries or cookies.
