With Halloween just around the corner, today we will explore the world of ghosts in this

program!

The Merriam-Webster online dictionary says the word “ghost” goes back a thousand years to

the “earliest recorded evidence of the language.” The first meaning of “ghost” was “the seat of life

or intelligence.” And it still has that meaning in some expressions.

However, today, the word “ghost” usually means the soul of a dead person. This meaning is

based on the idea that a person’s spirit and body are separate. The spirit can continue existing long

after the body has died.

During Halloween, kids dressed as ghosts are common sights. The costume is very simple:

just throw on a white cloth that covers you from head to foot. But do not expect to win any

costume competitions! You would not have a ghost of a chance. People use this expression to

mean that something is very unlikely to happen.

The sight might even make you turn pale as a ghost. This is used when people lose color in

their face. Sometimes this happens when a person is scared. But a bad cold or flu can also turn you

as pale as a ghost.

“Ghost” can also be a verb. In the 1880s the term ghost meant a person who works in secret

for another person. Ghostwriters produce speeches for politicians. They also produce books for

authors who want to tell their life stories but are not professional writers.

And sometimes ghostwriters are involved in a series of books, like the children’s stories

based on the teenage detective Nancy Drew. The series began in 1930. The author given credit

was Carolyn Keene. But she was not even real! Ghostwriters did all the work.

Another expression using “ghost” as a verb is simply to ghost. This does not mean to die. It

means to leave a place or event without saying “goodbye” to anyone. You can ghost from your job.
                  中国现代教育网 www.30edu.com 全国最大教师交流平台

You can ghost from a party. You can even ghost from a relationship. This is when you stop

communicating with someone because you are simply no longer interested in them.

But I will not ghost from Words and Their Stories.

24. The basic meaning of the word “ghost” nowadays is ___________.

    A. the secret of another person

    B. the spirit of a dead person

    C. the color of one’s face

    D. the origin of intelligence

25. If someone says “you don’t have a ghost of chance to win the match”, he means

    __________.

    A. without doubt you won’t lose the match

    B. the match is unlikely to happen

    C. it’s impossible for you to win the match

    D. you are too scared to win the match

26. What can be inferred about the word “ghost” according to the passage?

    A. Kids dressed in a white cloth like ghosts can win a costume competition.

    B. A bad cold can turn people as pale as a ghost because they fear illness.

    C. It was Carolyn Keene who ghostwrote the children’s stories.

    D. A person devoted to his job is unlikely to ghost from his job.

27. This passage is likely to appear in __________.

    A. a radio program

    B. a Halloween poster

    C. a fashion magazine

    D. a newspaper advertisement

                                    C

For many people who live in cities, parks are an important part of the landscape. They

provide a place for people to relax and play sports, as well as a shelter from the often severe

environment of a city. What people often overlook is that parks also provide considerable

environmental benefits.WWW.ziyuanku.com

One benefit of parks is that plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen, which humans
                  中国现代教育网 www.30edu.com 全国最大教师交流平台

need to breathe. According to one study, an acre of trees can absorb the same amount of carbon

dioxide that a typical car emits in 11,000 miles of driving. Parks also make cities cooler. Scientists

have long noted what is called the Urban Heat Island Effect: building materials such as metal and

concrete(混凝土) absorb much more of the sun’s heat and release(释放) it much more quickly

than organic surfaces like trees and grass. Because city landscapes contain so much of these

building materials, cities are usually warmer than surrounding rural areas. Parks and other green

spaces help to lessen the Urban Heat Island Effect.

Unfortunately, many cities cannot easily create more parks because most land is already

being used for buildings, roads, parking lots, and other essential parts of the urban environment.

However, cities could benefit from many of the positive effects of parks by encouraging citizens

to create another type of green space: rooftop gardens. While most people would not think of

starting a garden on their roof, human beings have been planting gardens on rooftops for

thousands of years. Some rooftop gardens are simple container gardens that anyone can create

with the investment(投资)of a few hundred dollars and a few hours of work.

Rooftop gardens provide many of the same benefits as other urban parks and garden spaces,

but without taking up the much-needed land. In the summer, rooftop gardens prevent buildings

from absorbing heat from the sun, which can significantly reduce cooling bills. In the winter,

gardens help control the heat that materials like brick and concrete release so quickly, leading to

savings on heating bills. Rooftop vegetable and herb gardens can also provide fresh food for city

settlers, making their diets healthier. Rooftop gardens are not only something everyone can enjoy,

they are also a smart environmental investment.

28. The underlined word “emits” in the second paragraph probably means “__________”.

    A. carries away

    B. takes up

    C. gives out

    D. breathes in

29. Which of the following contributes to the Urban Heat Island Effect?

    A. More building materials.

    B. More trees and grass.

    C. More parking lots.
                  中国现代教育网 www.30edu.com 全国最大教师交流平台

    D. More rooftop gardens.

30. When it comes to rooftop gardens, what can be inferred from the passage?

    A. They make people much happier.

    B. They provide more benefits than urban parks.

    C. They help to save money and keep a healthy diet.

    D. They have become very popular in recent years.

31. What’s the author’s attitude towards rooftop gardens?

    A. Sceptical.

    B. Supportive.

    C. Critical.

    D. Objective.

                                    D

Are you a social media addict? Are you always checking your smartphone to see how many

'likes' you've received for your latest post? Maybe you feel comforted by the sound that someone

has sent you a message?

Don't worry, you're not alone. We check our phones an average of 150 times a day, and

around 30% of the total time spent online is devoted to social media. Some experts now fear this

habit could be damaging our mental health.

This is something particularly bothering young adults, according to a study from the

University of Pittsburgh. It found the more they used social media, the more likely they were to be

depressed(沮丧的). In tests, those people who checked social media frequently were 2.7 times

more likely to be depressed compared to those who spent most of their time generally surfing the

internet, who had just 1.7 times the risk.

Some of us certainly feel sad when we're ignored on social media sites, or when we see

someone else having a better time than us. But depression is a more serious condition and clinical

psychologist, Abigael San, recently told the BBC that, "It’s a real issue, and it’s been getting

significantly worse over the last 5-6 years. You can get so hooked that it takes you away from

your real relationships." However, Abigael does admit that social media is more likely to worsen

pre-existing issues than directly cause them.

Other research by Glasgow University found that teenagers are affected by the 24-hour
                  中国现代教育网 www.30edu.com 全国最大教师交流平台

demands of their social media accounts. It found that those with higher levels of emotional

investment in social media, and who use it at night, were more likely to feel depressed and

anxious.

Despite these warning signs, why do some of us continue to keep clicking? Well, I suppose we

all want to be liked and we don't want to miss out on a conversation that's taking place online. But

we need to know when to switch off our virtual(虚拟的) online world and connect with the

real world instead.

32. Who is more likely to be depressed according to the study?

    A. People checking social media frequently.

    B. People surfing the Internet regularly.

    C. People receiving a few “likes” for their posts.

    D. People longing for more messages.

33. Why does the author give a quote from Abigael San in Para.4?

    A. To introduce the coming topic.

    B. To give a more supporting example.

    C. To stress the importance of social media.

    D. To explain the cause of a social media addict.

34. Why do people get addicted to social media according to the author?

    A. Because they have more time and money.

    B. Because the virtual world is much more attractive.

    C. Because they want to attract more attention.

    D. Because emotional investment in social media benefits them.

35. What’s the passage mainly about?

    A. It’s common for teenagers to be a social addict.

    B. Using smartphones does harm to people’s health.

    C. It’s better to stay away from virtual online world.

    D. Social media addiction contributes to depression.

Curling(冰壶运动)is a winter sport, played on ice. Therefore, it’s most popular in

northern countries like Canada. Curling is played in the USA by about 15,000 people. 36

Scottish winters were long and there were few forms of entertainment. So people began making a

sport out of sliding heavy stones on the frozen lakes. The game spread, and in the 1700s curling

clubs formed. Then Scottish soldiers brought it to North America.

37 Men, women, and children often compete on the same team, if they can slide

a forty-pound stone down the ice! Both teams slide their stones toward the same goal. After all 16

stones have been cast, the team whose stone has slid closest to the goal gets one point. $来&源:ziyuanku.com

38 The ice is so smooth and the stone is so heavy that even the smallest misjudgment in

a throw can make the stone slide much too far or stop too suddenly. 39 Water helps the

stone slide, but it can also change the stone’s path. ziyuanku.com

In curling, a broom is part of each player’s equipment. A good curler must know how much

force to use. The player must know the exact conditions of the ice on the court. 40 That may

explain why the international Olympic Committee decided to make curling an Olympic sport in

1998.

    A. Players compete on the court.

    B. Then the play begins in the other direction.

    C. Curling is played by teams of four people.

    D. In other words, a good curler must be a fine athlete.

    E. The rules are easy to learn, but playing the game is hard.

    F. The melting of the ice makes things tough for the curlers.

    G. Curling probably began in Scotland in the 1500s or earlier.

I have written a poem called Flying Kites, in which a man 41 his son to fly a kite. After

a few minutes, the child 42 drops the string and lets the kite soar(高飞). With joy in his eyes,

he watches it climb until it disappears 43 . The father realizes that 44 he’ll have to
                  中国现代教育网 www.30edu.com 全国最大教师交流平台

loosen the tie that binds(绑) him to his son. And he 45 , “Will I release the string as

unselfishly as that?”

Many years later my son, Gary, 46 he wouldn’t finish his college career. I tried to talk

him out of it. But none of my reasoning made any 47 . At the end of the semester Gary

moved back home.

Gary managed to find a 48 at a nursery and went at it with usual enthusiasm. I,

49 , was deeply disappointed. What was a college professor’s 50 doing at a job that any

high school dropout could perform? Then I tried to 51 him. “Look,” I said, “In a few years

you’ll be at your high school reunion with 52 classmates who became doctors, lawyers, and

engineers. Do you think you’ll be able to 53 that?”

“Yes, Dad,” he replied without 54 . Then he fixed his eyes on mine and said, “But the

real question is: Can you?”

Shame suddenly 55 me. I wasn’t thinking about my son; I was thinking about myself

and what my friends would think. The problem wasn’t Gary’s pride, it was mine. All at once I

remembered my 56 and the question it asked “ Will I release the 57 as unselfishly as

that?” At that moment I knew I had to let go. Gary was 58 enough to make his own choices.

This summer I travelled from noisy Beijing to Wuzhen, a beautiful village in Zhejiang

Province. Unfolded before me was 61 unique image of this water country-----the stone

bridge and the water flowing, all like fairytales to me.

However, 62 impressed me most was not the natural scenery but the scene of a

grandma bathing a little baby in a wooden basin with the door open. My friends couldn’t help

63 (take) pictures of them. To my surprise, the grandma smiled and waved at us. All of a

sudden, my heart was filled with 64 (warm).

I shared the photo and my 65 (forget) experience with my friends. They were 66

(simple)moved as I was, but at the same time they reminded me of the unpleasant experiences

in big cities. We feel embarrassed to see people quarrelling in public because they 67 (step)

on accidentally by strangers.

According to a recent survey 68 (make) in the November 2016 Jiangxi News: 45

their neighbors is just so-so, or even bad.

I have met many teachers since I begin my schooling. Of all my teachers, Mrs. Green is the

one who impresses me most. Though she is 50, she looks very young at her age. Comparing with

other teachers, Mrs. Green pays more attention to her way of teaching. She tries various ways to

make her class lively and interestingly. In her opinion, we will not only know “what” also

understand “why”. So instead of giving us answer immediately, she encourages us to think

carefully every time when she puts forward questions. With her help, we have learned how to

analyze and settled problems. What the amazing world of “why” she leads us to! She is such a

learned person that we all admire him very much.

第二节 写作
One Possible Version
Dear Mrs Jenkins,
I’m Li Hua, a student of Mick’s class. I’m extremely sorry to tell you Mick is in hospital. On
August 10, some classmates and I invited Mick to take a bike trip. On the way back, he fell off his
bike carelessly and had his leg broken. Immediately we took him to our local best hospital. After a
CT scan, the doctor said his leg injury was a bit serious and that he had to be treated for over a
month.
Fortunately, he has the insurance to cover the medical costs. Please don’t worry about him
since we are taking good care of him every day.
    Regards,

W: Well, I have a sister in college now. And there is another one who’ll be going next year. So I
had to earn a little money to help pay my way.

you know. Probably in about two weeks.
W: Thank you very much, sir, Goodbye.

Text 10

During my first year in China, I spent the summer holidays with my family at the seaside in
Beidaihe. The hotel that we were staying in was very near the sea, so we used to spend most of our
time swimming. Now, my wife is from Switzerland and when she was at home, she bought me a
watch as a present. The watch she bought was waterproof and I never took it off, even when I was
having a bath. When I went swimming at Beidaihe, I didn’t take my watch off either. On the last
day of our holidays I went swimming and came out of the sea without my watch. As I was leaving,
the manager of the hotel said, “Leave your address and phone number so that we can send your
watch to you if we can find it.” I did so but I wasn’t very hopeful. One week later, I got a phone
call from the hotel. The man who found my watch was a PLA man. He picked it up when he was
out walking on the beach one day and handed it in at police station. Threes days later, I got my
watch back and it was still working.
