                                        A
Her grades are fine; I’m not worried about that, but she
just doesn’t seem to love learning any more,” Alice’s mum said.
She’s absolutely right. I’d noticed the same thing about her daughter over the previous
two or three years when I’d been Alice’s middle school English, Latin, and writing teacher,
and I have an answer, right there on the tip of my tongue, to what has gone wrong. Yet I’m torn
between my responsibility to help Alice and the knowledge that what I have to say is a truth I’m
not sure this mother is ready to hear.
The truth for this parent and so many others is this: Her child has sacrificed her natural
curiosity and love of learning at the altar(圣坛) of achievement, and it’s our fault. Alice’s
parents, her teachers, society at large—we are all supposed to be blamed in this crime against
learning. From her first day of school, we pointed her toward that altar and trained her to measure
her progress by means of points, scores, and awards. We taught Alice that her potential is tied to
her intellect(智力), and that her intellect is more important than her character. We taught her to
come home proudly bearing grade As, championship prizes, and college acceptance, and not on
purpose, we taught her that we don’t really care how she obtains them. We taught her to protect
her academic and extracurricular perfection at all costs and that it’s better to quit when things get
challenging rather than risk losing that perfect record. Above all else, we taught her to fear failure.
That fear is what has destroyed her love of learning.

1.Both the mother and the author have noticed that________.
A.Alice hates to tell them the truth
B.Alice’s test scores are not so good
C.Alice chooses several subjects to learn
D.Alice doesn’t enjoy studying any more
根据第一段中的“but she just doesn’t seem to love learning any
more”和第二段中的“I’d noticed the same thing about her daughter”可知,Alice 的妈妈和
2.What does the underlined word “torn” mean in the passage?
A.Pained to choose. B.Guilty to quit.
C.Tired to manage. D.Certain to decide.
根据画线词后的“between my responsibility...and the knowledge
that what I have to say is a truth”可知,作者在两者之间很难选择。
    3. What does the teacher think of the girl?
A.Her academic perfection results from her character.
B.She is a gifted girl with spirits of challenging.
C.She is perfect in her character development.
     D.Her academic performance is great.

根据第三段中的“We taught her to protect...at all costs”可知,
Alice
                                        B
Despite being used by 1.34 billion people each year, traveling on
the Tube in London can actually be quite lonely.
One citizen, however,is trying to change this.“You get on the
Tube and it’s completely silent and it’s weird,” says Jonathan
Dunne, who has started a worldwide dialogue after giving out
badges(徽章)with the words “Tube chat?” last month,
encouraging passengers in London to get talking to one another.“I handed out 500 badges during
rush hour in a city of 8 million, expecting most of them to be thrown away, but after about 24
hours it completely snowballed,”he says.Dunne and his “Tube chat” campaign have since
been reported by media across the world, seeing TV interviews in Sweden, Brazil and the
U.K.,as well as countless website, newspaper and magazine appearances.
Although Dunne says he’s received mostly positive feedback, not everyone agrees with
his idea.Londoner Brian Wilson responded with a campaign of his own, handing out 500 badges
with the words “Don’t even think about it” on them. Michael Robinson,24,a student from
London, agrees.“Being on the Tube is the only peace and quiet some people get on their
journeys to and from work.It doesn’t need to be spoiled by people coming up and chatting to
you,” he says.
“People assume that I just walk up and talk to strangers, which I don’t,but it’s been a
great way to meet people you would never have normally spoken to,” Dunne says.
So if you ever end up using public transport in the West, why not say hello to the person next
to you?Just make sure to check for a badge first.

Jonathan Dunne

4.How did Dunne encourage London passengers to talk with each other?

A.By putting up posters on the Tube.
B.By advocating his idea on the media.
    C.By offering passengers special badges.
D.By starting a dialogue with passengers.
根据第二段的“who has started a worldwide dialogue after
giving out badges(徽章)with the words‘Tube chat?’”
“Tube chat?”
5.How is Dunne’s campaign getting along?
    A.It has caught international attention.
B.It has become a worldwide campaign.
C.Most passengers have refused to accept it.
D.Wilson has made great efforts to promote it.

根据第二段的“‘Tube chat’campaign have since been reported
by media across the world, seeing TV interviews in Sweden, Brazil and the U.K., as well as
countless website, newspaper and magazine appearances”可知,Dunne 和他的“Tube chat”运动
6.According to Michael Robinson, what should Tube passengers do?
A.Hand in their feedback in time.
B.Walk up and talk to strangers.
    C.Stop using public transport.
    D.Enjoy the peace quietly.
根据第三段的“Being on the Tube is the only peace and quiet
some people get on their journeys to and from work. It doesn’t need to be spoiled by people
coming up and chatting to you”可知,Michael Robinson 认为乘伦敦地铁是人们上下班时享
7.What can be the best title for the text?
    A.Tube Chat or Not
B.Lonely Travel in the London Tube
    C.Silence on the Tube
    D.Tube Passengers Wearing Badges
How to Avoid a Boring Conversation
What excuses should you use to avoid talking to people you don’t want to talk to?Here are
tips and inoffensive ways to get out of unwanted conversations.
·Go for a refill(续杯).
It is natural for anyone at a party to be excused to get a refill.1.________And once you
excuse yourself, make a move fast before the person requests you to get a refill for him as well.
·Pretend bad mood.
Cut off the conversation before it starts by saying something along the lines of “I’m not in
a good mood. Can I talk to you later if you don’t mind?” 2.________Say it firmly so that
people get the message loud and clear.
·Ask your friend to save you.
3.________Simply text your friend and ask him or her to come for apparently something
important. You will be able to skip a boring chat with a seemingly reasonable excuse.
·4.________
You are advised to look away from that person and don’t make eye contact,so that you
can give powerful hints(暗示)that you find the conversation extremely boring.5.________Be sure
to tune in to the conversation every now and then so you don’t come across as rude.
A.Behave in an obviously careless way.
B.Just be sure that the person you are talking to does not offer to accompany you to do so.
C.Don’t act too polite in an attempt to draw sympathy.
D.Use body language to indicate boredom.

E.Your friend is bound to perform brilliantly in coping with the dull one.
F.Look elsewhere and pretend that something else has caught your attention.
G.Stuck in an unwanted conversation, how do you get out of it?

    1.B 解析:选项 B 中的 so 就是指空前的“get a refill”这一行为;同时空后的“make
a move fast...as well”与选项 B 的内容相呼应。
    2.C 解析:空后的代词 it 指代空处前一句中的“I’m not in a good mood.Can I talk to
you later if you don’t mind?”,所以空处及后一句与这一问题有关;同时后一句中的“Say
    1.口语教室的重要性;
    2.主要功能(上口语课,举办各类活动);
    3.征求建议。
    注意:1.词数     80 左右,开头和结尾已给出,不计入总词数;
    2.可适当增加细节,以使行文连贯。

for your suggestions on our building a spokenEnglish classroom, I am specially writing to you.
As you know, with significantly important role of spokenEnglish, we are in great need of a

Meanwhile, it will be an ideal centre for us to carry out our various colorful English activities.
However, lacking related experience, I would appreciate it very much if you can give us
some constructive suggestions on our program.
