                  高一英语必修 3 月考试题
一.阅读理解(30 分)
                                   A
Dear Bob,
My friend’s family wants me to a dinner party The social customs in my country are
different from those here, so I’m a little worried about making mistakes.
Should I bring a gift, such as candy or flowers? Should I arrive on time or a little
late? At the dinner table, how can I know which fork or knife to use? How can I let
the family know that I’m thankful for their kindness?
                                                     Yours,
                                                         Kom
Dear Kom,
It’s a good idea to bring a gift when you go to a dinner party. Flowers are always
welcome, or you can bring a bottle of wine if you know the family drink it.
You should arrive on time or five to ten minutes late. Don’t get there early. If you
are going to be more than fifteen minutes late, you should call and tell them.
Try to relax at the dinner table. If you don’t know how to use the right fork, knife
or spoon, just watch the other guests, and follow them. If you still have no idea of
what to do, don’t be shy about asking the person next to you; it’s better to ask them
than to be silently uncomfortable and nervous.
                                                      Yours,
                                                             Bob

February has long been a month of romance. With the sweet smell of roses in the
air, romantic films hit cinemas and love stories fill newspapers and magazines.
On the 14th day, it is a custom for a boy to take his girlfriend out to dinner, buy
her flowers and chocolates, write poems, sing to her or even spell out her name with
rose petals! This is what you see on Valentine’s Day, a day named after Valentine
who was a priest in the third century Rome. When the emperor decided that single
men could become better soldiers than those with wives, he didn’t allow marriage.
But Valentine continued to perform marriage ceremonies for young lovers in
secret. When his actions were discovered, the emperor sentenced him to death. While
in prison, it is said that Valentine fell in love with the daughter of his prison guard.
Before his death, he wrote her a letter, which he signed “From your Valentine”, an

expression that is still in use today. Valentine died for what he believed in and so he
was made a Saint, as well as becoming one of history’s most romantic characters.
Nowadays, Valentine’s Day is also popular among Chinese young people. Some
students are planning to make Valentine’s cards for parents, teachers and friends.
Others want to hold parties at which they will exchange small gifts and eat heart-
shaped cakes. The idea is to have fun and encourage people to share in the spirit of St.
Valentine.

Ham was an orphan. He worked in a factory and every day he got a little money.
Hard work made him thin and weak. He wanted to borrow a lot of money to learn to

dinner to my friends.”

with this money after his death. I must ask you to remember one point. Your uncle
