Jackie Chan is arguably the biggest non-Hollywood movie star in the world. Chan has been very helpful in

creating the film type of kung-fu comedy, which transformed the Hong Kong film industry. Inspired by legendary

film clowns such as Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd, Chan has invented his own unique film style, combining

humor and stunt (特技).

Jackie Chan was born on April 7, 1954 in Hong Kong. He was the only child of Charles and Lee-Lee Chan.

Though the family lived in a flat in the Victoria Peak district, they didn’t own it — Charles worked as a cook for the

French ambassador, while Lee-Lee was the housekeeper.

Chan attended Nah-Hwa Primary School on Hong Kong Island, often spending his money on food, fighting on

the way to school with other children. He was not academically bright, failing to pass Primary 1 as his peers moved

on to Primary 3. Charles decided to send the seven-year-old boy to the Peking Opera School. Walking in with his

father, Chan saw children somersaulting and playing with swords and sticks. He recalls that he felt like entering

Disneyland. He would never return to an academic education. Though he speaks seven languages, he still cannot

read or write with great —proficiency and has someone else write his scripts for him.

As an amazing artist, Chan experienced strict training at the Peking Opera School, where he studied acting,

singing, dance and martial arts for 19 hours a day for a period of 10 years. Being something of a miracle, he was

introduced to public performance early. At eight he was cast in Big and Little Wong Tin Bar, with the great

Taiwanese star, Li Lihua, as his mother. Chan’s extraordinary athleticism and unique stunt-work quickly brought

him a lead role in Master with Crocked Fingers.

After several attempts to break into American cinema from the Hong Kong market, Chan finally met with

success, widening his heroic characters and making them more international.

B. Receiving training for legendary film clowns.

C. His acting in Hollywood.

A. Because his father was very fond of Peking Opera.

B. Because his father didn’t have enough money to support him.

C. Because Jackie Chan wasn’t doing well at the primary school.

D. Because Jackie Chan show great interest in public performance.

23. What is the main idea of the last two paragraph?

A. How Jackie Chan became an international star.

Who doesn’t want to live life in style? Life is like a road on which you never get a chance to return, and is not a

very long road either. So we should try to live life to the fullest and enjoy every bit of it.

Every individual has unique likings and preferences, and all of us try to live the lives that suit us best. The

world is like a painting cloth on which different people with different races, different languages, and different

cultural backgrounds interact. But among these, the arts provide an easy and natural way for people to connect.

People with a knack for the arts usually discover it in childhood. But art isn’t only for the talented; it can help

everyone grow. Those with a strong artistic background are often more energetic, and more successful in all fields of

life. Art widens the range of a person’s life.

Painting is one of the most popular art forms. Those who are interested in taking it up as a career need to go

through extensive training to get familiar with the various styles. Professional painters often host art exhibitions,

with art lovers from all over the world coming to see and buy their creations. Sometimes the paintings are sold at

high prices.

Performing arts are equally popular and admired. Dance, instrumental music, drama and so on require unusual

artistic talent as well as a long period of education and training before audiences start to applaud the performances.

But anyone with some artistic sense can make art part of his/ her life, and benefit from it.

German artist HA Schult is an unusual artist who uses trash (废物) to make sculptures. “We are living in the

time of garbage,” says Schult. “I created a thousand sculptures of garbage. They are a mirror of ourselves.” Here,

Schult was talking about his 1,000 trash sculptures in the form of humans. He first exhibited them in 1996 in the
                         中国现代教育网 www.30edu.com 全国最大教师交流平台

western German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

“They are social sculptures,” he explains. “They are not only sculptures for the eyes. They are sculptures to

spread the idea that we live in a time of garbage.” So far, Schult’s social sculptures have been on show in Paris, in

Moscow’s Red Square, on the Great Wall of China, and in the desert next to the Pyramids of Giza near Cairo.

HA Schulfs work is unforgettable. Although his work has had a big influence on the art world, Schult remains

modest (谦虚的) about his creations: “Artists have to learn every time. We are not important. All that counts is the

time in which we are living.”

Trash art has been around for years. But it seems that only the popular artists are regarded as true artists when

working with trash. Why can’t common people be considered artists when they use the same things and change them

into some form of personal art? Maybe it’s because we all have our own preset ideas of what art is and isn’t, or

whom artists are or should be.

You can be an artist like Schult if you try. Look at used metal cans. What might be done with them? Imagine

them in any number of new uses, or imagine them simply as an art form. What about boxes or clothing? Boxes can

usually serve as new storage containers and houses for pets. And clothing? Imagine taking old clothes and turning

them into hats or hanging organizers.

28. What do we know about Schult’s sculptures?

A. They served as garbage containers.

B. They reflected environmental problems.

C. They were first shown in Paris, France.

D. They were to raise economic awareness.

29. HA Schult’s artistic works also get the message across that an artist must .

A. be socially responsible

B. be as modest as possible

C. make garbage recyclable

D. take different kinds of artistic forms

30. Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A. Could You Be a Trash Artist?

B. What Are Social Sculptures?

C. Do You Know about Trash Art?

D. How Can We Deal with Used Cans?

                              Ways to Strengthen Your Brainpower

Want a healthier, sharper brain? It’s easier than you think to achieve improved cognition (认知) and memory.

Try these simple tips to power up your brain!

     1. Play ping-pong.

31 Researchers have found that in players older than 50, ping-pong improves brain health by activating

specific neurons (神经元), and shows promise in preventing dementia (an illness that affects the brain and memory,

and makes you gradually lose the ability to think and behave normally).

     2. Close your eyes.

Research has found that closing your eyes while recalling an event could help you remember details 23 percent

more accurately. 32 It’s thought that once visual distractions are removed, your brain focuses more efficiently.

     3. Shake your body.

Anew study has found that regular aerobic (有氧的) exercise can actually increase the size of your

hippocampus — the part of your brain that helps you learn and remember. 33

     4. Find your sleep sweet spot.

Getting a good night’s sleep is the best thing you can do for your brain long term. 34 The National Sleep

Foundation recommends seven to nine hours of shut-eye per night for adults ages 18 to 64, and seven to eight hours

for adults 65 and older.

     5. 35

Make a point to regularly ask yourself, “What if everything went right instead of wrong?” Positive thinking can

actually activate your brain’s physical ability to adapt and change. Former President Jimmy Carter, 91, who

responded to his recent cancer diagnosis with “optimism and determination,” is a great example of this.

     A. How does it work?

     B. Look on the bright side.

     C. Hang out with friends and family.

     D. It improves your mood and clears out your mind.

     E. So whether it’s dancing, jumping or running, it’s good for your brain.

     F. If you want to sharpen your brain, you have to focus your attention on yourself.

     G. Table tennis has long been praised for its ability to improve attention and concentration.

I love weekday afternoons. It is during this special time when I get to see one of the most wonderful sight in the

world. The musical and magical sounds float happy through the air from the playground just next to the kindergarten.

They are the sounds of children at play.

Each day before I pick up my boy, I watch this happy scene of children have one last break before they go

home. These beautiful children reminded me every day of that true life is about joy, laughter and love. We may all

have to do our work, clean our houses, raise our families and take care of all the tasks in life, but why they can’t do

all these things with joy, laughter and love? In fact, only thing we should take seriously in life is the love and joy

that we choose and share. It is what makes life worth live, but it is life’s greatest gift for us.
